About the firm
Bolt Burdon Kemp is a London claimant firm built around serious injury, with separate teams for spinal injury, adult and child brain injury, complex injury, medical negligence, military claims and abuse claims. That structure means cases go to lawyers who handle little else. The firm says it has over 40 years of experience in compensation work. It suits people with brain or spinal injuries and families of brain injured children. It says it will act on no win, no fee terms where a case is strong enough, and offers a free call back with a lawyer.

About the firm
Osbornes Law is a Camden firm founded in 1973, and personal injury is one of its largest teams, led by Sophie Davies. A separate catastrophic injury group handles brain, spinal and amputation cases, while the wider team takes road, cycling, work and public place claims. The firm says most claims run on no win, no fee terms and the first consultation is free.

How we compiled this list
We include firms with an office in London that do personal injury as a main part of their work. For each one we read the firm's own website in October 2026, checked it says it is regulated by the SRA, and wrote the description ourselves. Accreditations and first consultation terms are as the firm describes them, so confirm them when you call. Google ratings are shown with the date we checked them, where we have them.
No firm pays for its place on this list, and the order is our own.
This page is general information, not legal advice. The law described is for England and Wales as published on legislation.gov.uk, GOV.UK, the Civil Procedure Rules and the SRA in October 2026.
Time limits for injury claims
Under the Limitation Act 1980, you normally have 3 years to start court proceedings for a personal injury. The clock runs from the date of the injury or, if later, your date of knowledge. That's when you first knew the injury was significant, that it was caused by what someone did or failed to do, and who that person or organisation is. Not realising it was legally negligent doesn't delay the date. Knowledge also covers what you could reasonably have found out yourself, or with expert advice you'd be expected to seek.
Situation
Time limit
Most injury claims, including accidents and clinical negligence
3 years from the injury, or from your date of knowledge if later
Injured as a child
3 years from your 18th birthday, so usually until you turn 21
Lacking mental capacity to run a claim when it arose
3 years from when capacity is regained, or from death if sooner
The injured person dies within the 3 years
3 years from the death, or from the personal representative's date of knowledge, whichever is later
Criminal injuries compensation (CICA)
Usually 2 years from the crime. This is a separate scheme with its own rules
A court can let a late claim go ahead if it would be fair, weighing up the length of and reasons for the delay, the effect on the evidence, the defendant's conduct and how quickly you acted once you knew you might have a claim. Don't rely on it. If you're near the deadline, speak to a solicitor now.
Road accidents, whiplash and Official Injury Claim
Official Injury Claim is a free service run on behalf of the Ministry of Justice for minor road traffic injuries. You can use it without a lawyer, or with one. You can use it if you're 18 or over, you were inside a vehicle, the accident happened in England or Wales on or after 31 May 2021, and the injury is minor and worth under £5,000. Motorcyclists, cyclists, pedestrians, children and protected parties can't use it, and nor can some other groups.
Whiplash payments are fixed by a tariff under the Whiplash Injury Regulations 2021. It covers pain, suffering and loss of amenity for whiplash lasting up to 2 years, with a higher figure if you also have a minor psychological injury. The amounts went up from 31 May 2025.

These figures apply to accidents on or after 31 May 2025. For accidents from 31 May 2021 to 30 May 2025 the older tariff applies, from £240 to £4,345. In exceptional circumstances a court can raise the tariff amount by up to 20%. The tariff covers only pain, suffering and loss of amenity.
The small claims track is the normal route for a road accident claim where the injury part is worth no more than £5,000 and the whole claim no more than £10,000. The injury limit drops to £1,000 if the accident was before 31 May 2021, you were a pedestrian, cyclist, motorcyclist or pillion passenger, horse rider or wheelchair or mobility scooter user, or in some other cases, such as a claim by a child or where the other vehicle was registered abroad. A child's whiplash claim normally goes to the fast track instead. For other injury claims, such as a trip or an accident at work, the small claims limit is £1,500 for the injury within £10,000 overall.
How a claim works, and London's county court
Before court, both sides are expected to follow a pre-action protocol: an exchange of letters and evidence meant to settle the claim or narrow the dispute. There are separate protocols for general injury claims, clinical negligence, and disease and illness claims.
Claims portals: road accident claims for accidents on or after 31 May 2021, worth up to £25,000 and above the small claims limit, start on the electronic portal at claimsportal.org.uk. Work and public place accident claims up to £25,000 have their own portal process
Tracks: above the small claims limits, claims up to £25,000 normally go to the fast track, simpler claims up to £100,000 to the intermediate track, and larger or complex ones to the multi-track
Fixed recoverable costs: for injury claims where the cause of action arose on or after 1 October 2023, or for disease claims where the letter of claim was sent on or after that date, the legal costs the losing side pays in the fast and intermediate tracks are set amounts. Mesothelioma and asbestos lung disease claims are excluded and go to the multi-track
Part 36 offers: a formal written offer to settle, open for at least 21 days. A side that turns one down and then does no better at trial can face extra costs and interest
Serious injuries: lump sums for future care and lost earnings are adjusted by the personal injury discount rate, which has been 0.5% since 11 January 2025, up from minus 0.25%
If a London claim goes to court, it may be heard at Central London County Court, which handles civil money claims. Check the court named on your paperwork, as claims can be sent to other hearing centres.

Paying for a claim: no win, no fee and costs protection
Most injury claims are funded by a conditional fee agreement, usually called no win, no fee. If you win, your solicitor can charge a success fee on top of their normal fee. In a personal injury case at first instance, the law caps that success fee at 25% of your damages for pain, suffering and loss of amenity plus past financial losses, after any benefits repaid to the DWP. Damages for future losses, such as future care, are outside the cap. The success fee comes out of your damages, and the other side can't be ordered to pay it (mesothelioma claims are the exception: there the success fee can still be claimed from the other side, and the 25% cap doesn't apply).
Damages based agreements: the lawyer takes a share of your damages instead of a fee. The same 25% cap applies in injury cases at first instance, including VAT
After the event insurance: a policy that covers some costs if the claim fails. The premium generally can't be recovered from the other side, so ask who pays it and when
Qualified one way costs shifting (QOCS): in injury and death claims, if you lose, the other side can usually only enforce a costs order against you up to the amount of any damages, interest and costs you've been awarded or agreed
When QOCS doesn't protect you: the main cases are if the claim is struck out as having no reasonable grounds, as an abuse of process or for obstructive conduct, or if the court finds it fundamentally dishonest. The court can also allow enforcement in some other cases, such as a claim made partly for someone else's benefit
Before you sign, ask the firm to explain in writing what you'll pay if you win, if you lose, and if you stop the claim early. It's also worth checking whether your home or car insurance includes legal expenses cover.
Accidents at work and clinical negligence
At work. Most employers in Great Britain must have employers' liability insurance covering injury and disease suffered by staff at work, with at least £5 million of cover. Employers also have to report work related deaths, certain injuries, some diseases and dangerous occurrences under RIDDOR. Disease claims, such as asbestos related illness, have their own pre-action protocol, and mesothelioma claims go to the multi-track.
Clinical negligence. Claims about medical treatment follow the same 3 year time limit, with the same rules for children and people lacking capacity. They have their own pre-action protocol, the Pre-Action Protocol for the Resolution of Clinical Disputes. NHS Resolution, a special health authority, exists to provide expertise to the NHS to resolve concerns fairly. Clinical negligence claims must normally go to the multi-track, unless the claim would otherwise be intermediate track, the defendant has admitted liability in full in its letter of response under the clinical disputes protocol, and it hasn't raised a limitation defence. So fixed recoverable costs don't usually apply to them.
Many London injury firms run a separate clinical negligence team. If your claim has both elements, such as an accident followed by poor treatment, ask whether one team can handle both.
Criminal injuries compensation
If you were hurt in a violent crime, you can apply to the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority (CICA) under the Criminal Injuries Compensation Scheme 2012. It covers physical injuries, disabling mental injuries, sexual or physical abuse, the death of a close relative, funeral costs, and in some cases lost earnings and expenses. Injury payments range from £1,000 to £250,000.
Report it: the crime must be reported to the police before you apply. You don't have to wait for the investigation or any court case to finish
Time limit: usually within 2 years of the crime. CICA can accept a late claim only in exceptional circumstances, such as where your health stopped you claiming, or for childhood abuse
Children: if a crime against someone under 18 was reported before their 18th birthday, the application must be received by their 20th birthday. If it was first reported on or after their 18th birthday, they have 2 years from that report
Cost: it's free to apply and you don't need a representative. If you use one, CICA won't pay their costs
Not accidents: CICA doesn't pay for accidents, such as a road crash where the driver didn't mean to cause harm
London personal injury law: common questions
How long do I have to make a personal injury claim?
Usually 3 years from the date of the injury, or from the date you first knew the injury was significant and who caused it, if that's later. For a child, the 3 years starts on their 18th birthday, so they usually have until they turn 21. For criminal injuries compensation, the limit is usually 2 years from the crime.
Do I need a solicitor for a whiplash claim?
Not always. If you're 18 or over, were inside a vehicle, the accident was in England or Wales on or after 31 May 2021 and the injury is worth under £5,000, you can claim for free through Official Injury Claim without a lawyer. You can still use a lawyer if you prefer. Cyclists, motorcyclists, pedestrians and children can't use the service.
How much of my compensation will a no win, no fee solicitor take?
In a personal injury case at first instance, the success fee is capped by law at 25% of your damages for pain, suffering and loss of amenity and past financial losses. Damages for future losses are outside the cap. Ask the firm what else you might pay, such as an insurance premium, and get it in writing.
Will I have to pay the other side's costs if I lose?
Usually not beyond what you've recovered. Under qualified one way costs shifting, a costs order against an injury claimant who loses can normally only be enforced up to the damages, interest and costs awarded or agreed in their favour. That protection can be lost in some cases, including if the claim is struck out for having no reasonable grounds, as an abuse of process or because of obstructive conduct, or if the court finds it fundamentally dishonest.
Do I need a claims company to find a solicitor?
No. Since 1 April 2013, solicitors, barristers, insurers and claims management companies have been banned from paying or receiving referral fees for personal injury and death claims, so you can go straight to a firm. Marketing calls about claims are also banned unless you've already agreed to receive them.
Can I claim if I was attacked?
Yes, through the Criminal Injuries Compensation Authority, as long as the crime was reported to the police. It's free to apply, you don't need a representative, and you usually have to apply within 2 years. Injury payments range from £1,000 to £250,000.
What changed for whiplash claims in 2025?
The whiplash tariff went up for accidents on or after 31 May 2025. The amounts now run from £275 for an injury lasting up to 3 months to £4,975 for 18 to 24 months with a minor psychological injury. Accidents before 31 May 2025 still use the older figures.
