Popular reviewed lists
We're working through every list: our own write-up of each firm, checks against the SRA's register, and plain English information on how that area of law works. Here are some of the most used.
How our lists work
Finding a solicitor usually means ringing around firms you know nothing about. We put the options for each city and area of law on one page so you can compare them first.
When we put a firm on a list we look at whether it actually does that kind of work in that city, whether it is regulated, what clients say in public reviews and how easy it is to reach.
No UK firm pays for its place on a list at the moment, and the order is our own.
Before you call a solicitor
- Write down the key dates. When things happened, any court dates, and any deadline in a letter you've received.
- Gather your paperwork. Police paperwork, contracts, emails, medical reports or whatever relates to the matter.
- Ask about the first appointment. Whether it's free or fixed price, how long it runs and who you'll be speaking with.
- Ask how fees work. Hourly rate, fixed fee or no win no fee, and what you'd pay if the matter goes further than expected.
- Check free help too. Citizens Advice gives free general advice, and you can check if you can get legal aid on GOV.UK.
Common questions
Is Top 10 Lawyers free to use?
Yes. Browsing the lists costs nothing and you don't need to sign up. You deal with the law firm directly and agree any fees with them.
Do law firms pay to be listed?
Not at the moment. No firm on our UK lists pays for its place, and the order is our own. If that changes we will say so on every page where it applies.
How do you choose which firms go on a list?
We look at whether the firm actually does that type of work in that city, whether it is regulated, what clients say in public reviews and how easy the firm is to reach. Our how we compile our lists page has the detail.
What is the difference between a solicitor and a lawyer?
In England and Wales "solicitor" is a protected title: only people on the roll of solicitors can use it, and they are regulated by the Solicitors Regulation Authority. "Lawyer" is a general word that covers solicitors, barristers, chartered legal executives and others. Immigration advice can also come from advisers regulated by the Immigration Advice Authority.
How do I check a solicitor is regulated?
Search the firm or the solicitor's name on the Solicitors Register on the SRA website. Regulated firms also show the SRA's digital badge on their own website.
Are you a law firm?
No. Top 10 Lawyers is a directory. We don't give legal advice and nothing on this site should be read as advice about your situation.
